Why Are Tattoo Deposits So Important?

If you’ve ever booked a tattoo, you’ve probably been asked for a deposit. But what is it actually for, and why do tattoo artists require one?

At Mythology Tattoo, deposits are an important part of booking your appointment. They help us protect the time, preparation and work that goes into every tattoo — long before you sit in the chair.

Your appointment time is reserved just for you

When you book an appointment, that time is taken off our schedule and reserved specifically for you.

Unlike a walk-in, where availability can change throughout the day, a booked appointment gives you a guaranteed time with your chosen artist. Once that time is reserved, we can’t simply fill it with another client if you decide not to attend at short notice.

That’s why deposits are important. They secure your appointment and allow us to plan our days properly.

There’s work involved before your appointment

For custom tattoos, the work doesn’t start when you walk through the door.

The tattoo artist spends time working on designs and preparing for appointments, often outside of normal shop hours. There can be hours of thought, drawing, planning and preparation involved before your tattoo appointment even begins.

That time is part of the service too.

A deposit helps compensate the artist for the time and work that has already gone into preparing for your tattoo, particularly if an appointment is cancelled or missed without enough notice.

Why is a deposit forfeited?

We completely understand that things happen. Emergencies, unexpected situations and life in general can sometimes get in the way.

Regardless of the reason for a late cancellation or no-show, the deposit is treated as compensation for the time that was reserved and the work that has already gone into the appointment.

This isn’t because we don’t care about what has happened. It’s because, from the business side, a late cancellation or no-show has a financial impact on us too.

For example, if you have a five-hour appointment booked and you’ve paid a $400 deposit, you may lose that $400 when you don’t attend. However, we don’t simply gain $400.

By missing that appointment, we’ve also lost the opportunity to offer those five hours to another client. If we could have filled that time with another five-hour tattoo worth $600, the shop has potentially lost that entire $600 in income.

So while it may feel like “I’ve lost my $400 deposit,” the reality is that the artist and business have also lost the opportunity to earn the remaining amount from that appointment — and potentially the opportunity to book somebody else into that time altogether.

The deposit is there to compensate for that loss; it isn’t a way for us to make money from cancellations.

Your deposit comes off the final tattoo

One important thing to remember: your deposit isn’t an extra charge on top of your tattoo.

Your deposit is put towards the final cost of your tattoo appointment.

So if your tattoo costs $600 and you’ve paid a $100 deposit, you would have $500 remaining to pay on the day.

Why can’t we just book the time without a deposit?

We completely understand that plans can change. Life happens!

But from the artist’s side, a last-minute cancellation or no-show can mean losing an entire appointment slot that could have been offered to another client. It can also mean losing hours of preparation and design work.

A deposit shows that you’re committed to your appointment and allows us to reserve that time specifically for you.

What about walk-ins?

We love our walk-in clients and always try to accommodate them whenever we can.

However, walk-ins aren’t guaranteed.

Our availability depends on the day’s bookings, cancellations and how much time our artists have available. If you have a specific day or time in mind, booking an appointment with a deposit is the best way to make sure you have that time secured.

In short...

Your deposit helps cover more than just a space in the diary.

It helps secure your appointment, compensates the artist for preparation and design time, and protects the business from the financial impact of a late cancellation or no-show.

And remember — your deposit comes off the final cost of your tattoo.

We appreciate that paying a deposit is another step when booking, but it’s an important part of making sure your appointment, your artist’s time and the work that goes into your tattoo are all respected.
